Choosing the Right Web Host

Here are some guidelines when choosing cheap web hosting. Follow them to pick your host but keep in mind that even though they are comprehensive, they aren’t infallible either. Always do your own due diligence.

The guidelines are as follows:

  • Always check the resource limits. Most hosts indicated bandwidth and storage limits but there are hidden limits too, such as CPU time, especially with hosts that offer “unlimited” resources
  • Check the features such as PHP and MySQL versions. Although these days these are kept up to date, some applications may require special features, so make sure your host has them
  • Windows or Linux? Most of the time you’ll go with Linux because it’s cheaper and most applications and scripts run on Linux. However, should you want to run an ASP application, you would need a Windows server
  • Are your sites not too big? If you receive over 1,000 unique visitors per day, choose VPS rather than shared hosting. Reseller hosting is actually the same as shared only it allows you to host more sites, the resources however are usually the same as those of shared accounts
  • Always check user reviews before signing up
